Livestock and Poultry Research Facilities

About the project

This project is the first of two phases to renew existing facilities for the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' livestock and poultry programs. This first phase includes 10 facilities totaling approximately 130,000-gross-square-feet of new space located along Plantation Road, Glade Road, and at Kentland Farm in Blacksburg, Virginia. The facilities were split into separate bid packages in an effort to allocate funding appropriately.

Bid Package #1 – Construction of the new Swine Facility. The Swine Facility is approximately 24,300 SF of support space and animal handling areas meant for pigs of various age groups.

Bid Package #2 – New construction of a Beef Nutrition and Physiology Research Facility, as well as a new Hay Barn adjacent. The Beef Nutrition and Physiology Research Facility is a 26,800 SF facility for Beef Cattle feed studies.

Bid Package #3 – Demolition of two existing Poultry buildings and the construction of a Turkey Grow-Out Facility and a Broiler Grow-Out Facility. These small-scale research facilities provide animal handling areas, with two animal housing rooms and support spaces in each building.

Bid Package #4 – Demolition of existing silos and the Granary building as well as the new construction of an Equitation Barn and Equipment Storage Building. The Equitation Barn is a 29-stall horse barn equipped with tack rooms, wash and groom stalls, as well as manure storage.

Bid Package #5 – Construction of three new hay barns throughout the Smithfield, Warm Hearth and Hethwood Farms located close to the Blacksburg campus. Demolition of the existing Swine Center and decommissioning of the Swine Lagoons.
