Custodial Services

The Custodial Services team provides housekeeping services on a scheduled basis to general funded university academic and administrative buildings. The team creates a clean and well-maintained environment for  students, faculty, and staff. The Custodial Services team is responsible for cleaning approximately 5 million square feet of academic and administrative space across the university. Facilities Operations also contracts with outside vendors to clean an additional 1.2 million square feet of university and leased space. A program of custodial care is provided to each building based upon need and funding.

REIMBURSABLE REQUESTS

To request special or extra services on a reimbursable basis, submit an Interdepartmental Service Request through HokieMart. For example, departmental space floor care such as carpet cleaning, stripping, and waxing are considered chargeable services.

ACADEMIC + ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDINGS SCHEDULE

DAILY

Public spaces, main office suites, kitchen areas, break rooms, classrooms, computer labs, and teaching labs*

  • Household trash removed*
  • Entry mats vacuumed
  • Entry glass cleaned
  • Spot dust mopped/ swept*
  • Spot mopped/ vacuumed*
  • Common touch surfaces disinfected
  • Cleaned and disinfected (restrooms)
  • Items restocked (restrooms)

WEEKLY

  • Fully vacuumed or wet mopped
  • Auto-scrub floors (where applicable)
  • Dusted (where applicable)
  • Recyclable materials removed

Private office spaces, research level 1 and 2 labs, and conference rooms are cleaned weekly*

MONTHLY

Public spaces

  • Floors buffed

ANNUALLY

Public and general assignment spaces

  • Floors restored
  • Carpets cleaned
