Commonwealth Ballroom Renovations
The 15,000-square-foot Commonwealth Ballroom in Squires Student Center underwent renovations to modernize the venue and boost its accessibility and energy efficiency.
Managed by Virginia Tech Student Engagement and Campus Life, a department within Student Affairs, the Commonwealth Ballroom is utilized daily for special events, conferences, career fairs, speakers, and more.
The renovated ballroom features updated ceilings, walls, and a hardwood floor. In alignment with the university’s environmental stewardship efforts, approximately 120 light fixtures were replaced with LED lights, and a new HVAC system was installed. These upgrades have improved the ballroom’s environmental efficiency, temperature and air flow capabilities, and overall brightness.
Bolstering accessibility was also a key component to the renovations. Accessibility enhancements include installation of an ADA-compliant stage and door operator at the ballroom’s entrance.
Advanced LED theatrical lighting, a new audio reinforcement system, and two client-operated projection systems were also installed.
