July 2021: Burruss Hall tree removal and replacement

One of the two spruce trees to be replaced in front of Burruss Hall. The trees have been experiencing a fungal disease that continues to be exasperated by humid Blacksburg summers.

Date: July 19, 2021

From the university arborist:

On July 24, 2021, two blue spruce trees flanking the front walkway of Burruss Hall will be removed.

The decision to remove the trees follows extensive examinations by the university arborist. The trees are experiencing a fungal leaf disease that causes tree decline and impacts the trees' structural integrity. The condition has been exasperated by the warm humid summers in Blacksburg; neither tree will receover.

Both trees will be replaced during the fall 2021 planting season with southern magnolia trees that are better suited for the site and climate conditions in Blacksburg.
