Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL)
What is a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL)?
A TMDL is a regulatory term used in the U.S. Clean Water Act (CWA) describing a value of the maximum amount of a pollutant that a body of water can receive while still meeting water quality standards. Stroubles Creek, which runs through the Virginia Tech campus, is considered impaired by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and must satisfy TMDL requirements.
The TMDL is covered under Section I of the VAR04 Permit. As part of Section I, Virginia Tech has developed and implemented an Outfall Reconnaissance Procedure, which has been integrated into MCM 3.
