This project will include significant renovations to War Memorial Hall and McComas Hall in support of the university’s student health, wellness, counseling, and recreational sport programs.
War Memorial Hall is a multi-use building operated and maintained as a combined use gymnasium-recreation and academic instructional facility. Current programs with significant space in the building include Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise, Recreational Sports (Rec Sports), the School of Education, the Registrar, and the Virginia Tech Police Department. A portion of the building is to be repurposed by incorporating the Cook Counseling Center, Hokie Wellness , and select Rec Sports administration spaces currently housed in a wing of McComas Hall, as well as adding faculty office space for the School of Education faculty. By relocating these entities into War Memorial Hall, the student health center can achieve a significant expansion of its clinic program at McComas Hall and the School of Education faculty will be more centralized.
McComas Hall was constructed in 1998 as a recreation building and a student health center. In addition to recreation space, the building now houses the Schiffert Health Center, the Cook Counseling Center, and Hokie Wellness offices. This study will program and plan the infill/upfit of McComas Hall space vacated by the Cook Counseling Center, and Hokie Wellness’ and recreation sports’ administration spaces, which will be relocated to War Memorial Hall. The infill/upfit space will be designed for student wellness functions including an expanded Schiffert Health Center. A small addition to McComas Hall may be required to accommodate expanded student wellness functions.
