Parking Structure Project
Map showing the proposed location
of the parking structure
Plans for a 1,200 vehicle parking space structure began in late 2007. The parking structure is intended to be aesthetically interesting, functionally efficient, and extremely safe. It is envisioned to be somewhat open allowing light and air flow. Exterior materials will likely include locally quarried "Hokie stone," architectural precast concrete, glass at stairs and elevators, and appropriate landscaping.
Location
The parking structure will be situated in the Prices Fork parking lots near Bishop Favrao Hall. See the map for details.
Design-Build Delivery
The project's delivery method is design-build (D-B) -- the first ever for Virginia Tech. This delivery method enables the architecture and engineering firm and the contractor to develop a design together based on criteria provided by the university. By faciliting design and construction, D-B allows for earlier delivery of the project.
Timeline
The parking structure project is currently in the request for qualifications stage, which are due March 21, 2008. University Planning Design & Construction Services will short list the D-B teams based on their qualifications. The request for proposal stage begins in April. The D-B teams will then have approximately eight weeks to work on and present their proposal. UPDC will score and select a proposal. The construction start date is to be determined.
